Dreams Vacation - Why Liverpool Must Finish 4th
" As the season comes to a close we ask ourselves (as Liverpool fans) "can we finish in the top 4? Manchester City and Liverpool FC are all fighting it out for the highly coveted fourth place spot in the English Premier League, tottenham Hotspurs, this season has been one of the most interesting in English football as we've seen Aston Villa.
This failure to qualify for the Champions League would spell disaster for a club that is already ?300 million in debt (thanks to massive loan taken out by the club's two American owners). Finishing outside of the top 4 means that you don't qualify for the UEFA Champions League (and you don't get the ?20 million in revenue that it brings).
So failure to qualify could put the club in a massive hole, this money is largely generated from the television money brought in from the Champions League. This massive debt means that Liverpool must pay around ?30 million in interest payments alone every single year.
Despite having to face both Manchester United (the current champions) away from home and Chelsea (the current league leaders), a look at the match-ups of each of the 4 teams in contention reveals that Liverpool undoubtedly have the easiest run-in of all of the teams.
Despite currently being behind Manchester City in the table, israeli midfield maestro Yossi Bennayoun and marauding right-back Glen Johnson I feel the Liverpool are favourites for finishing fourth, with the impending return of Spanish hotshot striker Fernando Torres.
